Diversionary Therapy Technologies (DTT), based in Brisbane, Australia, has developed a device called DITTO that has been shown to reduce the pain and anxiety in children undergoing traumatic medical procedures. The device employs a multi-modal sensory based distraction technology, which is similar to virtual reality, called augmented reality. Compared to traditional diversionary therapy practice, DITTO has the ability to engage the child in seconds and the distraction can significantly last for up to 40 minutes. This encompasses the time frame required which is long enough to perform many painful medical procedures e.g. burn dressing changes, and other simple procedures such as IV cannula insertion. The device is portable, waterproof and employs a variety of interactive games, movies, stories and procedural preparation. The child is encouraged to interact with the device that includes touch screen, colourful marker keys, and response to physical movement, thereby, distracting them.
The company has conducted randomised control trials in children aged between 3 and 8 years to assess the efficacy of DITTO in pain management. Significant results were received in reducing pain scores in children, compared to standard practice.
The company is collaborating with a number of universities and hospitals in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US.
We have a comprehensive patent portfolio, trademark protection and copyright on all aspects of this device. DTT has regulatory approvals to sell DITTO in Australia and New Zealand in 2010. DTT has pending applications for the United Kingdom / European Union and the United States of America. DTT is in the process of identifying organisations that can partner to manufacture, sell and distribute the device to the hospital and clinical market in these regions. The DITTO Portable Console's ATRG number is 156474.
